Dear Safeguarding Partners,
We hope that this February newsletter finds you well and fully immersed in your respective Safeguarding initiatives around the world, despite the challenges the global pandemic continues to present us all.
After recently launching our new website and beginning to better connect our partner offices around the world, TutelaMinorum is continuing to engage in and share its own initiatives regarding the Safeguarding of minors and vulnerable persons.
Through our website platform, TutelaMinorum has begun to collect and publish a section of resources, information and “best practices” concerning the various fields of Safeguarding. It has also begun to publicize information regarding your own initiatives, in order to continue to nurture and promote a global culture of care and safeguarding, which without the generous sharing of your resources, would not be possible. On behalf of the entire Commission, may we extend a sincere thank you for your work thus far.
With this last note in mind, we are pleased to highlight some important upcoming events and initiatives, both on behalf of our own Commission members and also our Partner institutions. These events include:
- A Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Abuse celebrated by multiple national and local Churches on the First Friday of Lent. Further Days of Prayer will continue to be offered around the world in accordance with Pope Francis’ 2016 request to Episcopal Conferences. We would invite you to let us know when your local church plans to mark the Day and we will happily help you promote it. Or indeed, if you are developing resources and are looking for ideas and inspiration visit our Knowledge Base, where you can find prayers and liturgies used by other partners around the world.
- A series on the Theology of Safeguarding sponsored by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland launched in January. Our very own Commission member, Father Hans Zollner SJ, contributed the first video presentation in January, and the following 8 commissioned videos will continue to be shared through our website as they are released
- An all-day online event entitled, Abuse within the Catholic Church: “A Submerged Reality” hosted by the Pontifical Oriental Institute will take place on February 24, TutelaMinorum Commission member Prof. Myriam Wijlens will be presenting and the event can be followed live through the POI Youtube channel
- A webinar sponsored by St. Paul University’s Centre for Safeguarding Minors and Vulnerable Persons entitled, A Deep wound: Sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church. This event will be held on February 26, 2021 12:00-1:15 p.m. EST.
Further links and information for all of these events can be found on our new website, www.tutelaminorum.org, under the News and Events Section.
As we continue to disseminate and deepen our current resources, we ask that you continue to share any further news, events, or information by emailing us at info@tutelaminorum.va.
We also ask that you share our own through your personal networks and channels. In the hopes of constantly expanding and welcoming new members into our Global Safeguarding community, please also feel free to suggest to us any Safeguarding offices that you believe may be interested in this initiative.
Again, thank you for your generous help and efforts thus far in making the Church a safer place. We look forward to our future collaborations!

The Pontifical Oriental Institute Prepares to Host Its Online Event: Abuse within the Church: "A Submerged Reality"
The issue of abuse has not rendered the reality of the Eastern churches indifferent. Instead, this reality, through the Pontifical Oriental Institute, which in turn functions as an academic reality to the entire Eastern Church, has become a place of conversation and openness focused on the delicate question of abuses as a "submerged reality" on which to further work and …
