Dear Safeguarding Partners,

Greetings from the Vatican! Time is moving quickly this calendar year, and another month of global Safeguarding initiatives has just passed us by with resounding successes reported to us from our members and partners around the world. With April and the Eastern Season right around the corner, TutelaMinorum is now in the full swing of coordinating its 2021 Safeguarding events and sharing your own initiatives and resources. We hope that this month of March has been just as fruitful for you as it has been for us in terms of continuing to chart out the events, initiatives and resources that are proving to be indispensable in making the Church a safer place around the world.

With so many initiatives occurring and continuing to be developed, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight both some important events that took place this past month and others that we are preparing for in the near future. The news and events include:
  • TutelaMinorum is proud to welcome its newest member, Juan Carlos Cruz from Chile. As a survivor of clerical sexual abuse, Mr. Cruz has become a passionate advocate for victims and survivors of clerical abuse around the world. Read more about Mr. Cruz’s story and global advocacy.
  • The Spirit Fire Survivors Fellowship has recently launched their weekly broadcast series entitled, “Abuse, Faith and Pastoral Care. Live every Sunday, each week’s episode invites an expert in the field of Safeguarding to engage in an open conversation with a victim of abuse. The Spirit Fire Fellowship founder and one of our global Safeguarding Partners, Teresa Pitt-Green, invited TutelaMinorum’s President, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, to co-host the inaugural episode.
  • From March 24-27, The Centre for Safeguarding Minors and Vulnerable Persons at St. Paul University hosted a four-day seminar on the dynamics of trauma in cases of sexual abuse, focusing on the ways in which the promise of Christian redemption can open up new avenues for healing and reconciliation. The opening webinar was presented by Dr. Mariéle Wulf on March 24, and it was entitled “Trauma in the Context of Sexual Abuse: Psychological and Theological Reflections”. Find out more about this this event on our website.
  • TutelaMinorum is excited to continue to help prepare and spread awareness of Harvard’s global interfaith symposium on preventing and healing sexual abuse. This event will have as its keynote speaker Dr. Denis Mukwege, a 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate who was recognized for his efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. Other presenters will include TutelaMinorum’s very own Father Hans Zollner and Professor Benyam Mezmur along with other leading experts from global faith communities, international organizations, and educational institutions. If you have not done so yet, register for this landmark event here!
  • Finally, TutelaMinorum would be remiss not to mention the departure of its founding Secretary, Monsignor Robert Oliver. Over the six of years of his mandate, Monsignor Oliver was instrumental in establishing the mission of TutelaMinorum and spreading its reach around the world. Monsignor Oliver’s effective leadership, depth of knowledge and model of how to compassionately live out the Gospel in everyday life will surely be missed by TutelaMinorum, but the difference he has personally made in making the Church a safer place will be long lasting. The Commission and our entire Safeguarding Community will forever be indebted to you, Monsignor Oliver. Thank you for your service!
With so much to mention, please access further information on all these events on our website, www.tutelaminorum.org, under the News and Events Section. Please also continue to share with us your own news and events by contacting us at info@tutelaminorum.org!

We look forward to contacting you again with further updates and news at the end of April, and we thank you again for your continued dedication in advancing our common Safeguarding mission. In the meantime, we are wishing you a blessed remainder of this Lenten Season and a joyous celebration of Easter!

A presto,
TutelaMinorum
