LIMA — As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen a culture of safeguarding across Latin America, Fr Agustín Jara Podestá, OFM, regional expert for the Americas from the Commission, participated in the Continental Seminar for Major Superiors and Congregational Delegates, organised by the Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Religious (CLAR) from 17 to 19 April in Lima, Peru.
The gathering brought together representatives from 14 countries under the theme “Born Again” and served as a space for reflection and pastoral renewal aimed at reinforcing safeguarding commitments within religious life across the region.
Continuing the collaborative work established during a previous meeting between the two institutions in Bogotá, Fr Jara Podestá accompanied one of the seminar sessions and presented the Commission’s strategic priorities and formation resources available to religious congregations. His participation reaffirmed the Commission’s support for the safeguarding formation initiatives that CLAR continues to develop throughout the continent.
The seminar also provided an opportunity for direct dialogue with participants, creating space for discussion on the practical implementation of safeguarding guidelines and the challenges involved in promoting safe environments. The exchange further strengthened the role of coordination between the Commission and CLAR.
“Accompanying these processes is a priority for the Commission,” Fr Jara Podestá said. “Our goal is to contribute to the strong formation work already being carried out by CLAR, ensuring that the experiences and needs of congregations are met with consistent listening and support at the ecclesial level.”
The seminar concluded with renewed commitment among participants to advance processes of institutional transformation and safeguarding within religious life. The collaboration between the Commission and CLAR highlighted the importance of a synodal approach in which local experience and global guidance work together to ensure the care and protection of the most vulnerable throughout the region.
